As part of Air Products UK's 60th Anniversary celebrations focusing on STEM and the community, a total of 60 students aged 11-13 were selected from six schools near to 3 plants to take part in an amazing project, Space Camp 2018.
Interactive workshops were held at the schools and the 60 lucky junior AirStronauts spent four nights camping under the stars in Welshpool, Wales learning all there is to know about space and science from a team of experts.
There were lots of activities including hands-on sessions from astronaut in training, Dr Jackie Bell; BBC Stargazing Live presenter, Mark Thompson; astrophysicists Dr Megan Argo and Dr Steve Croft; LIN demos from our Science Ambassador Mally Davison; and rocket building and launching with the RAF.
The week was capped off with a series of exciting space balloon launches that sent the students' experiments up to the outer edges of the atmosphere. With cameras and computers strapped to each balloon, the students tracked their rise and fall back down to earth; chasing them through the countryside to retrieve their experiments.
The feedback from the students and teachers was very positive they gave an amazing overall score of 9.1 out of 10 for the event.
Not only is it Air Products' 60th Anniversary in the UK but it is also NASA's 60th birthday this year too, so what better way to mark the occasion than with Space Camp 2018.
