Using technology to improve dermatology

The aim of this competition is to identify and fund innovative technology that improves diagnosis and ongoing management of skin conditions. The competition is particularly looking for solutions that:

·  suit all skin conditions and all ages

·  can be applied to other medical conditions

NHS Scotland is looking for new solutions from industry partners that include, but are not limited to:

·  increasing the number of citizens who can better manage their ongoing skin condition through lifestyle and prevention or early intervention, combined with enhanced compliance with medication and treatment

·  providing secure, ‘virtual discussions’ between citizens, GPs, nurse specialists, dermatologists and other specialty doctors. Virtual discussions should allow sharing of digital (including 3D) images of skin conditions, data reported by patients (collected over agreed times) and collected by other healthcare professionals

This competition is in 2 phases:

Phase 1
In phase 1 you will show the technical feasibility of your proposed innovation. Projects can range in size up to a total cost of £30,000 each. Development contracts for feasibility studies should last up to 6 months. Phase 1 will have total funding of up to £150,000.

Phase 2 is only open to applicants that have successfully completed phase 1.

Cell & gene therapies industrial manufacture

Businesses can apply for a share of up to £11 million to industrialise and establish the large-scale manufacture of cell and gene therapies.

The aim of this competition is to stimulate UK manufacturing for businesses developing novel cell and gene therapies. Projects must focus on the industrialisation of the current manufacturing process for a cell or gene therapy.  For the project areas Innovate UK are particularly interested in, click here.

You must also show how your project will improve business growth, productivity and/or export opportunities for at least one UK SME involved in the project.

·  Projects are expected to focus mostly on industrial research, (although there may be some elements of experimental development)

·  Receive up to 70% funding

Emerging & enabling technologies – Round 1

Businesses can apply for a share of £15 million for innovation projects to stimulate the new products and services of tomorrow.

The aim of this competition is to help businesses innovate to find new revenue sources. Proposals should show how to achieve a step change in business growth, productivity and export opportunities for at least one UK small and medium-sized enterprise (SME).

Vaccines for global epidemics – preclinical

This competition will support projects seeking to develop candidate vaccines and vaccine platform technologies at the preclinical stage. The aim is to enable an effective and rapid response during future outbreaks of disease. The UK Vaccine Network has identified these 12 pathogens as a priority. This competition is wholly funded by Official Development Assistance. This means that vaccines developed as part of the competition should be appropriate for use in low and middle-income countries (LMICs) and outbreak settings.

Applicants must describe the candidate vaccine or vaccine platform technology that they are developing. They should give details of:

·  its competitive advantage over alternative solutions

·  its relevance to global epidemic disease threats

This competition has two stages

Stage 1
Applicants should explore the scientific, technical and commercial feasibility of their concept, which should focus on the development of vaccines and vaccine technology.
Individual contracts will be worth up to £500,000.
Projects are expected to last for up to 12 months.
Only projects that are supported in stage 1 will be eligible to apply for stage 2 funding.

Now landed ... The Future of Aviation Security

Businesses can apply for up to £1m of funding through the Future Aviation Security Solutions (FASS) programme.  In this competition FASS is seeking new technologies and approaches to improve our ability to detect the widest possible range of explosives, weapons and other threat materials that can be taken on board an aircraft.

This competition seeks proposals to the following 2 challenges:

·  Screening of people and their hand luggage

·  Screening of aviation cargo and hold luggage

Improving care for stroke patients: apply for innovation funding

A Northern Ireland-led international consortium is inviting innovative businesses to apply for a share of up to £2.7 million to develop new technical care solutions for stroke patients.

The project – Mobile Assistance for Groups and Individuals in the Community (MAGIC) – aims to discover innovative approaches to post-stroke care and improve the independence of stroke survivors.

This competition is in 3 phases and you could receive up to up to €930,000 (£827,300) approximately.  For more information, please click here.

The aim of this competition is to stimulate and broaden innovation in manufacturing and materials. Innovate UK will fund a range of projects that address identified technical or commercial challenges. These aim to lead to increased productivity, competitiveness and growth for UK businesses.  A project may focus on technical feasibility, industrial research or experimental development. This will depend on the challenge identified.

You could receive up to £1,400,000.
