Leading manufacturers of wear resistant process plant & equipment recently hosted an Apprenticeship open – day at their premises aiming to introduce new talent within the growing business.

Having worked very closely with Dudley College, key candidates were offered Apprenticeship opportunities available within the manufacturing, production and commercial departments, the day resulted with attendance from over 28 individuals all ranging from the ages of 16 – 19 some of whom were also accompanied by parents.

The open day included a tour of the 35,000ft² manufacturing facility, different departments and presentations from John Connolly, and other heads of department.

Louise Dorsett employment officer at Dudley College also attended the day, Louise commented “We felt that the recruitment open day was an excellent idea and wish that more employers would take the time to do this.  It provided the young people with an insight into the expectations of the company, an explanation of job roles and duties and an opportunity to see where they would be working and who with. We are certain that if more employers organised similar events they would be much more successful about recruiting the right young person.

“Obviously we feel that the Apprenticeships area very positive way to grow your workforce and a very positive way to recruit.  However in order to have a successful Apprenticeship it is vital that the employer is supportive and has an internal training plan to mirror the Apprenticeship qualifications.  The young people need a good mentor within the company and they are only able to learn if on-the-job training is provided.  This takes time and patience but is very worthwhile in the end. It is a pleasure to work with a company that are so positive and pro-active about apprenticeships and the employment of youngsters.”

Operations Director Graham Bailey commented “Since the event we have now employed 5 new apprentices. We believe individuals should have both practical and theory based skills that are essential within organisations today. Looking at the current difficulties many individuals are experiencing as a result of the economic downturn and the increasing unemployment rates in west midlands, we are offering youngsters with the opportunity to have a positive and bright future, as a number of senior members within the business had once joined us as apprentices and have now excelled over the years to become managers and department heads
