Not only are Innovate UK paying attention to the importance of transport within their Infrastructure Systems focus in their current delivery plan, but there seems to be a a buzz around funding available within vehicles and transportation. So naturally we wanted to share details of the great funding opportunities that are available in this area right now.

Connected and autonomous vehicles 2 On the 22nd August, Innovate UK opened it’s Connected and autonomous vehicles 2 competition.

The aim of this competition is to come up with technical solutions for connected and autonomous vehicle features that provide real-world benefits to users. This includes how these vehicles will work as part of a wider transport system. Innovate UK are seeking proposals where the commercial benefit is clear.

The competition is split into 4 streams:

Stream 1 is looking to fund a large-scale challenge to develop and demonstrate a vehicle operating at SAE level 4 automation (‘high automation’).

Streams 2 & 3 are looking to fund industry-led collaborative research and development (R&D) projects and technical feasibility studies. These projects should focus on or both autonomy and connectivity.

Stream 4 is looking to fund collaborative R&D projects that can deliver results within 1 year. The aim of this stream is to fund projects to develop products, services and business models that provide energy reduction and air quality improvements. These improvements should come from the vehicle and energy infrastructure as a system and must be achieved by using connected and autonomous vehicle technology.

Overall funding & project details

Innovate UK have divided the £35m as follows:

  • £15 million to fund a large-scale challenge in Stream 1 (one or two projects maximum)
  • £15 million to fund projects in Streams 2 and 3
  • £5 million to fund projects in Stream 4

For technical feasibility studies and industrial research, you could get up to 70% of your eligible project costs funded if you are a small business or for experimental development projects (which are nearer to market), you could get up to 45% of your eligible project costs funded.

This competition closes on 9th Novemeber 2016, if this is of interest to you or you’d like to find out more, get in touch.

Catalysing Growth Through Research for Transport Equipment Manufacturing - Call for Collaborative Research and Development Projects - Derby/Notts Funding

The Catalysing Growth through Research for Transport Equipment Manufacturing project (GTR) is a partnership between the University of Derby’s Institute for Innovation in Sustainable Engineering (IISE) and The iNet @ Loughborough University (iNet). It will deliver a programme of intensive research and innovation support to SMEs engaged in transport equipment manufacturing product and process technologies and associated supply chains. GTR is part funded through ERDF.

This call will provide grant support for collaborative research, innovation and development projects which will stimulate and facilitate productive innovation partnerships between SMEs/Higher Education Institutes (HEIs)/Research Institutes.

The TEM sector includes several key sub-sectors (Aerospace, Automotive, Marine, Rail and Motorsport), infrastructure and related enabling technologies (e.g. systems, security, materials, production methods etc.). Experience has shown that collaborative projects can build upon intersector needs and opportunities, as well as the needs of each sub-sector.

The aim of this call is to assist the industrial and research communities to work together to stimulate innovation in the transport equipment manufacturing sector (TEM) The call is seeking SME led projects from any technology, engineering or industrial area within TEM involving a collaboration with at least one UK-based HEI/Research Institute. The project may involve more than one SME but SMEs must be based in the D2N2 area in order to receive funding. HEI/Research Institutions can be based within or outside the area.

Applications are invited from all sizes of projects.  The grant available will be dependent on the number of applications and size of projects. It’s anticipated that the maximum grant will be around £82k (being 40% of total eligible expenditure).

If you’d like more information on this call, please get in touch.
