Local electrical heating specialist Ecolec, based in Wolverhampton, recently tasted successÂ
for the second year in the last four, being shortlisted for a prestigious Electrical Times AwardÂ
for 2013. For a small company to reach the finals of these awards alongside the majorÂ
players in the electrical industry is rare once, let alone twice in so few years.
The company, owned by entrepreneur Chandru Ray, was shortlisted this time in theÂ
Innovative Commercial/Industrial Product of the Year category 2013 for its unique radiantÂ
ceiling panel heaters produced for a major private yacht MY Vava II.
The brand name ECOLEC® was launched in 1995 with the specific objective of supplyingÂ
radiant flat panel electric heaters to the market that were economic to run. With more thanÂ
100,000 heaters sold since then, ECOLEC® has become a company that supplies bespokeÂ
designs for architects and designers  with a standard range of space saving radiant andÂ
splash-proof bathroom flat panel heaters controlled by wireless timer and  sold  through itsÂ
web site at www.ecolec.co.uk and through electrical wholesalers and accredited electricalÂ
installers across the country.Â
Chandru Ray loves nothing better than a challenge and has built a reputation for taking onÂ
projects that require new ideas and new concepts in electrical heating.
MY Vava II Â a mightily impressive private yacht built by Devonport Yachts at Plymouth,Â
England is the 97-metre super yacht commissioned by the Swiss-Italian entrepreneurÂ
Ernesto Bertarelli for his British musician wife Kirsty.Â
The requirement from Ecolec was for a controllable radiant heater to provide warmth andÂ
comfort to the owners and their guests in the open air, while at leisure, whatever theÂ
weather. It is elliptical in shape comprising of eight manageable sections mounted on theÂ
ceiling for installation over a seating area spanning 6m x 4m. This type of heating mimics theÂ
radiant heat of the sun without the tiresome orange glow of other infrared heaters.
Ecolec had been working hard on the concept of concealed heat emitters  in walls andÂ
behind mirrors for some time, and it seemed a small leap of faith to put the heat emittersÂ
into the ceiling of this very expensive boat  all £100 million worth of it. These rear deckÂ
radiant ceiling heaters were designed within the stringent parameters available on the boatÂ
and were for the deck with three sides open. They were designed to provide a surfaceÂ
temperature of 120°C from 10 kW of power with a bespoke control panel.
Chandru Ray is delighted his product has been recognised in the Electrical Industry ÂOscarsÂ:Â
ÂItÂs always nice when what you do get recognition, and we are genuinely delighted that ourÂ
entry for these awards met with success that saw us in the midst of branded householdÂ
names.Â
