Innovative uses of data for defence staff

Competition closes 21st March 2017

The Ministry of Defence (MOD) is looking to invest in innovative new technologies, processes and ways of operating that improve the ability of defence staff to analyse and exploit data in decision-making.

 

The MOD is seeking solutions in 3 challenge areas:

  • rapid and automated integration of new sensors
     
  • freeing up personnel by the innovative use of machine learning algorithms and artificial intelligence for military advantage
     
  • effective use of operator cognitive capacity, particularly by human-machine teaming
     

The first phase of this competition seeks initial ideas. Winners of phase 1 funding will compete in a second phase to develop the idea further.

Biomedical Catalyst 2017 – Round 1

Receive up to £1.5m

 

Competition closes 29th March 2017

 

The competition aim is to develop innovative healthcare technologies and processes that will help provide:

  • disease prevention and proactive management of health and chronic conditions
  • earlier and better detection and diagnosis of disease, leading to better patient outcomes
  • tailored treatments that either change the underlying disease or offer potential cures

The competition has 2 awards:

  • feasibility studies award: to explore and evaluate the commercial potential of innovative scientific ideas
  • primer award: to conduct a technical evaluation of your idea through to proof of concept in a model system?

Commercialisation of quantum technologies 3 – Central Research and Development

Competition closes 5th April 2017

 

The aim of this competition is to encourage collaborative feasibility studies that will improve understanding of the technical or market feasibility of a product or service.

 

The scope of this competition allows for both technical and non-technical projects. This includes projects that focus on understanding the business or market opportunity and challenges.

 

Technical projects - These projects will establish feasibility for devices that exploit one or more of the following phenomena:

  • entanglement
  • superposition

Non-technical projects - These projects will involve work to understand:

  • future markets
  • applications or business models
  • the route to future commercialisation
  • adoption of quantum technologies
  • the effect that quantum technologies might have on existing businesses or business models

APC7, anchoring low carbon technology in the UK

Receive up to £20m in grant funding per project

 

Competition closes 5th April 2017

The competition’s aim is to take demonstrated on-vehicle technologies towards commercialisation in either on or off road vehicles. Grant funded projects must:

  • develop technologies that will lead to significant reductions in vehicle CO2 or other emissions
     
  • align with Automotive Council Technology Group Roadmaps
     
  • develop the UK’s supply chain capability in low carbon vehicle propulsion or light weight systems technology
     

APC7 is seeking proposals for collaborative research and development projects that demonstrate the development of technologies based around one or more of the following technology areas:

  • Thermal Propulsion Systems
  • Lightweight vehicle and powertrain structures
  • Electric machines and power electronics
  • Energy storage and energy management
  • Alternative propulsion system

You must:

  • include at least 1 vehicle manufacturer and/or a tier 1 supplier as part of your consortium
  • and  include at least 1 small to medium enterprise (SME) partner

Vaccines for global epidemics – clinical

This competition aims to support the clinical development of candidate vaccines against 12 diseases. For the full list, click here.

The competition will support the clinical development of candidate vaccines up to and including phase IIb trials. The funders will also consider co-funding phase III trials, either with industry or other philanthropic or government funders.?

 

Funding and project details


The competition is a single stage. It covers carrying out clinical development of vaccines up to and including phase IIb trials.

  • individual contracts to be valued up to £3m
  • projects should last between 24 and 36 months

This competition is aimed at supporting candidate vaccines that are ready for, or close to moving into phase I clinical trials. This can include good laboratory practice toxicology or manufacturing activity to support the proposed clinical trial.?
